How to Light Your Candle (The Right Way)

How to Light Your Candle (The Right Way)

Learn how to light a candle the right way with these 5 expert tips from Lifebloom.

How to Light Your Candle (The Right Way)

Lighting a candle might seem simple, but doing it the right way makes all the difference. To get the most out of your Lifebloom candle and extend its burn time, follow these candle lighting tips that help ensure a clean, even burn every time.

1. Trim Your Wick First

Before every light, trim your wick to about 1/4" (for cotton wicks) or as close to the wax as possible (for wood wicks). This prevents excess soot and ensures the flame burns cleanly. Regular scissors are fine but a wick trimmer is a great addition to your candle care toolkit as it gets a better angle for narrower vessel openings as it burns.

2. Let the Wax Pool Fully

When you light your candle, allow it to burn until the entire top layer of wax becomes liquid and reaches the edges of the vessel. This helps avoid tunneling, which shortens your candle’s life.

3. Burn in Safe Increments

We recommend burning your candle for 1–3 hours at a time, especially on the first burn. Avoid burning longer than 4 hours to prevent overheating or weakening the vessel.

4. Re-Center the Wick

After blowing out your candle, gently re-center the wick while the wax is still soft. This helps it burn evenly next time.

5. Burn Safely

Always place your candle on a flat, fire-resistant surface away from drafts, flammable materials, and out of reach of children and pets. These simple habits go a long way in getting a longer, cleaner, and more satisfying burn from your candles. Explore more candle care tips on our Candle Care page.
